4.32.01pm GMT Thu 18th Mar 2010

Commenting on the announcement that First Milk are to close the Rothesay Creamery, local Liberal Democrat MP Alan Reid said:

George Lyon MEP"The workers are clearly devestated.

"I have met with First Milk and sought assurances that they will continue to take the milk to the mainland for processing.

"They have agreed to do this for twelve months. This gives a little time for the Scottish Government to step in and agree a rescue package to save the jobs and creamery from closure."

Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland and local resident George Lyon added:

"This is a body blow for local farmers and the local community.

"The loss of nineteen jobs will be keenly felt in an area already suffering due to the economic downturn."
